Cut the Noise with the SilencerCo Scythe Ti

Introduction

There are few bigger names in the suppressor industry than SilencerCo at the moment. SiCo has been around for quite a while, and has dominated much of the suppressor market for some time. At the top of the food chain, we can expect some cool and innovative products from SiCo, and today I bring you one of them; The SilencerCo Scythe Ti suppressor. The company offers two different Scythe models, the Ti we are looking at today, and the Scythe STM.

The SilencerCo Scythe

Of the two Scythe models there is a bit of a split in purpose. The Ti model is made completely from titanium, a first for SilencerCo. The STM model is made from stainless steel, and has a two stage design that allows you to use it in a short or long configuration. Both models use an anchor brake at the front of the muzzle end to help reduce recoil.

SilencerCo pioneered the hub system that nearly every manufacturer uses today. This allows you the ability to change the way you mount your suppressor, whether it be direct thread, QD mount with an ASR suppressor mount or otherwise.

Our Scythe Ti was focused more for activities like hunting, where its compact size and lightweight make it optimal for long hikes. And the Scythe is rated for up to 300RUM cartridges which covers most of what a typical American hunter would use.

As I unboxed the Scythe Ti, the immediate impression was how incredibly light it is. At just over 6-ounces it almost feels fake, but I can assure you it is not. The raw titanium color looks great in my opinion, and the smooth welds are so fine they look more like tool marks.

It came with a couple tools for servicing the Scythe, as well as a 5/8-24 threaded hub for mounting. But like most cans these days, you can install another hub if you’d rather use one of the the QD devices or muzzle brakes.

In the Field

Using the Scythe in the field was done both on a public rifle range as well as in the Rocky Mountains where I typically spend my time. I would end up using the Scythe on several different rifles of various calibers. Myself and the friends that came along would take turns between shooting and listening to the report.

Sound Suppression

On .308 Winchester sized cartridges the sound suppression was excellent. Even for other shooters near the muzzle of the rifle the report was tolerable. And from any distance of five or so yards away it sounded as pleasant as could be. Regardless of where we were, I felt no reason to use hearing protection with the Scythe. Of course that is not what most people would recommend, for safety sake anyways.

Shooting through the Scythe on the range, and in the cold and wet Rocky Mountains gave excellent insight to the Scythe’s suppression. I would happily use it on any of my sub 30-caliber rifles, it sounds fantastic.

Recoil Reduction

With its built-in anchor brake, the Scythe also helps reduce recoil. By diverting the escaping gas perpendicular to the bore axis, it reduces the force pushed against the shoulder of the shooter. Again this is a design that SiCo explored and has done very well with on several of their other suppressors like the Omega 300, you can see more about that one here.

Smaller cartridges like 308 Winchester, 260 Remington and 6.5 Creedmoor are not particularly heavy recoiling. But with the Scythe installed they feel like a child’s rifle, with hardly any recoil at all. Grant me this though, several of the rifles used during testing were heavier than a typical hunting rifle. That likely helped with recoil as well.

Removing the anchor brake from the Scythe can further reduce weight, and length, but c’mon… The Scythe is already incredibly light, and the brake portion so short that it seems silly to change it out for a traditional end cap. It seems I’m not the only one who thinks so, as a search of the internet show hardly any images of the Scythe without its brake in place.

Accuracy

Like most suppressors in my experience, the Scythe had no ill affects on the accuracy of the rifle. If anything it helped improve accuracy by increasing the mass of the rifle making it more anchored. Additionally, the recoil reduction helps keep you on target, which helps spot hits or misses on the target. Both of these facets will increase the amounts of hits you make.

Suppressors typically strip high pressure waves from the bullet as it leaves the muzzle. Much like a boat traveling through a protected harbor that keeps the big waves out. As the bullet passes through each baffle in the suppressor, it travels through more and more calm air. This allows the bullet to start its flight with less interference and they typically shoot better.

Modularity

With its 1.375×24 TPI hub, the Scythe can use any number of different mounting solutions. There are various SiCo brake options but you don’t need to stop there, as even other manufacturers hub mounts will fit the Scythe. Though it comes with a simple and lightweight 5/8-24 direct-thread hub, you can change it to better fit your purposes should you desire.

Again, I saw no reason to remove the anchor brake from the Scythe, and it would appear most people don’t.

Value

With an MSRP of $1174 the Scythe Ti isn’t exactly an entry level suppressor. But it is well worth the extra bit of cheddar you pay. Its hard to find a lighter can in this category, as most popular models are around 2 ounces or more heavier.

So if you are a hunter looking for the most compact and lightest suppressor you can get for your hunt, you should definitely be looking at the Scythe.

Its popularity also means that it flaws can be shown. SilencerCo says the Scythe has a very low rate of failure, but there are enough reports of failure to not be insignificant for those looking. And SilencerCo appears to be very quick to repair or replace them.

My Verdict

Shooting with the SilencerCo Scythe has proven to be very pleasant. It provides great sound suppression without adding a bunch of weight and length to your rifle. You can also configure the Scythe to mount in various ways that best fit your application. And on some of the heavier calibers it really helps reduce recoil, while smaller cartridges recoil is reduced to minimal. This performance does come at a slightly higher cost than many other options, but worth it in my opinion.

Suppressors have become mainstream for most firearms owners, save those poor souls living behind enemy lines. For those living in free America however, suppressors are everywhere. I am a huge fan of shooting suppressed, and I am always happy to share my experience with new suppressor products. Today I am bringing you a review of something new to me, from a company called Anechoic Suppressors. The model we are looking at today is the Anechox 35 suppressor.

Anechoic is a strange word, but makes a lot more sense if you break it down. The definition of the word means free from echo and reverberations. These suppressors use Anechoic’s X-Baffle Anechoic™️ Chamber System to reduce the report of your firearm. Additionally the design uses a flow-through style design to help reduce back pressure on semi-automatic firearms. I’m glad you’re here for it, lets get deep into the baffles of these suppressors.

As I opened the box to the Anechox suppressor I was impressed with what I saw, but would these suppressors live up to the expectation? I lifted the suppressor from the foam, and was very surprised at the weight. They definitely feel like pistol cans, as if they were made from aluminum. My immediate thoughts were; no way this is 338LM rated. Something I intended to get to the bottom of for sure.

The Anechox 35 and 35L both came finished in OD Green Cerakote, which made them stand out a little bit. The exterior machined facets gave a good grip purchase, and the curious vents at the front of the suppressor looked very interesting as well. The overall workmanship looked fantastic.

Also in the box there were included tools for servicing and disassembling the suppressors. I really like the way the tools fit the hub end of the suppressors, there is very positive engagement reducing the likelihood of slipping off and damaging either the tool or suppressor. There was also a large Torx-bit included that fits into the muzzle end of the Anechox 35. The hub threads matched the industry standard which I really liked, as it would allow me to use a variety of mounting configurations. The suppressors came with 1/2-28 direct-thread adaptors installed.

Shooting The Anechoic 35 Suppressors

After playing with these cans for a bit, it was time to get them hot. The very first shots through the Anechox suppressors were on my CZ Scorpion EVO. The Scorpion typically has a SiCo Octane 45 suppressor on it, and after swapping out to the Anechox 35 it sounded almost the same. Neither of us could distinguish a noticeable difference.

These suppressors are so multi-purpose that it created a dilemma of finding a wide enough variety of host firearms to test every facet of their performance. I had to bring quite a collection, which made these tests quite fun.

Besides the Scorpion EVO, I also shot the Anechox 35’s on a Shadow Systems MR920. A smaller 9mm pistol threaded 1/2-28, using a Nielson booster assembly which threaded nicely into both suppressors. I also switched over to a Canik METE SFT Pro 9mm pistol, a full-size gun to get a feel for handling both sizes of pistol.

Rifle Use

I also wanted to test the Anechox 35’s on various rifles. First up was one of myAR15 builds, which was an easy option with predictable results. Additionally I figured I would use it on my Desert Tech WLVRN, mainly because the green can looks good on a green gun. Additionally I would use my Desert Tech SRS M2, because of the ease of swapping calibers. I could shoot 308win, 6.5CM, and 338LM all through the same gun using the Anechoic 35 suppressors.

I figured that shooting all these calibers from 338 down to 5.56 and 9mm would give a very good understanding of this suppressors performance. I figure it would likely cover most anything the average gun owner would need suppressed.

Sound Suppression Performance

Noise

Shooting my assortment of firearms with the Anechox 35 and 35L suppressors was an interesting experience. The semi-auto pistols shot flawlessly with the suppressors installed, and while they were certainly much quieter, they were louder than I expected. After some thinking, I think it’d just been a while since I shot suppressed 9mm auto pistols. The opening breech of the pistol sends a good portion of the sound waves right at you.

The autoloading rifles on the other hand sounded just as I expected, probably because I’m used to them suppressed. Smaller carbines like the Quattro 15 rifle, and the WLVRN sounded fantastic. Likely due to the oversized suppressor for the smaller 5.56 cartridges.

Stepping it up to something bigger like 308 Winchester still produced an acceptable muzzle report. Since I don’t have any testing equipment, lab coats, or PHD, I can only judge these suppressors based on what my ears hear. Having shot countless suppressed 308 rounds, the Anechox 35’s sounded as good as most anything else. They may or may not have been quieter than a comparable can, but there was simply not enough difference for me to care.

I’ll admit, when I saw that these suppressors were rated for 338LM I was a bit uneasy. They are incredibly light, and I felt like a Lapua would blow them open. But once I’d screwed them onto the rifle there was no going back. I’d swapped the 22″ 308 barrel from my SRS M2 and installed a 26″ 338LM barrel in its place. I loaded a few rounds of 300gr ammunition, and with some trepidation I sent a few downrange. I watched my bullets impact the steel target at 760 yards, so I sent a few more. Everything sounded just like it always does when I shoot the 338 suppressed, including the slap of lead against steel.

Backpressure

Its not uncommon to feel debris blowing back from suppressed pistols. There is always some backpressure that can send things into your face, so make sure you wear eye pro always. While there was some noticeable backpressure while shooting the 9mm pistols, it wasn’t enough to concern me.

Direct impingement rifles like my AR seem a little more susceptible to backpressure. But again, I think the oversize Anechoic chambers allowed for much gas expansion, reducing backpressure. And with rifles like my WLVRN, you can adjust the gas pressure down as needed to prevent excessive blowback and over-operation.

Accuracy

In my experience, suppressors help calm down a rifle as it recoils. This often results in better accuracy while shooting suppressed. I found that the Anechox 35’s had no adverse affects on my rifles accuracy, if anything they shot better than unsuppressed.

Pros and Cons

Perhaps the greatest feature of these can’s is their multi-purpose use. If you are only going to have one suppressor, then one of these would be a great choice due to the adaptability.

As I’ve just mentioned, the sound suppression for most caliber firearms is great. And having a multipurpose suppressor like this would allow you to use it on a whole collection of firearms. Add to that the ease of convertibility using the industry standard hub mounting threads, you can mount these suppressors on anything. Moving the cans from one host to another can be enhanced by using your preferred mounting system.

These Anechox 35’s are quite pleasing to the eye. The sexy splines down the suppressor add both tactile gripping for install and removal as well as a pleasing look. The flow-thru front end of the suppressor also has an attractive appeal to it, in addition to its functionality. The variety of color options adds to the good looks of these cans, I love the green.

Because they are so lightweight, it came as no surprise that these cans heat up fast. Most cans do, so it’s not a big deal. It did seem like they heated up quick with few shots, but anything funneling a 338 Lapua through it this fast has the right to get hot in my opinion.

One thing I found that was slightly irritating was the 1/2-28 threaded caps that came with the suppressors were pretty tight. By that I mean you almost had to push them over the muzzle threads to get them started. The lead-in was tight, the threads themselves were fine. It was a small issue, but worth noting.

Another slight peeve of mine was related to the finish. Cerakote usually holds up pretty good for me, but it almost seemed like this Cerakote didn’t get cooked or something, as it felt too easy to mar the finish. For me this isn’t a huge deal as I typically re-coat my cans every other year or so. It also could just be because of the green color perhaps, either way it wasn’t a big deal to me. Once they got hot, and were well handled you couldn’t really notice anyways.

Concluding Thoughts

I applaud the efforts of folks bringing new and better products to the willingly oppressed NFA owners of this country. The Anechoic Anechox 35 suppressor series fits great into my collection of firearms, and increases the adaptability of my suppressors. If they were the only suppressors I owned, I could do everything I need to do suppressed.

With an MSRP starting at $1099, they are not the cheapest suppressors out there for sure. But you don’t wan’t that anyways. The light weight feature of these suppressors alone warrants the price, but adding in their multipurpose hub mounting compatibility, limited full-auto use, and the versatility of going from your Glock to your 338 precision rifle makes it a pretty easy choice.

Dealing with Infringement

You can’t swing a dead cat in my house without hitting a good suppressor. I suppose you could say I am a bit of an addict. No, it isn’t because I like to keep ATF agents employed, nor do I enjoy collecting stamps. I just love shooting suppressed. My rights were first violated over twenty years ago now, and it has only gotten worse with time. By that I mean both the violation and the addiction to cans.
Today I wanted to tell you all about the latest suppressor I was able to get hands-on, the CGS Group Hyperion K suppressor. I have seen them all over on social media and gun-tubers channels, but I had yet to put any ammo through one. As you might imagine I jumped at the chance.

The Hyperion

According to CGS, the Hyperion utilizes a proprietary technology to manufacture and heat treat this all grade 5 titanium suppressor. It is the product of 3D printing using the direct metal laser sintered (DMLS) process. Using a laser fired into a bed of titanium powder to melt it into the pattern of their design. This alone sounds like an amazingly complicated and expensive process. But I’m just a dummy who swings hammers and gets greasy.

What I can tell you, is that the result of this process has created one of the cleanest looking cans I’ve seen. The curious design and textures of this suppressor make it aesthetically pleasing and more importantly extremely light. The Hyperion senior weighs in at fifteen ounces, and this K model is even lighter at 10.5 ounces.
The back of the can is threaded 5/8-24, and also features a tapered opening to use CGS’s proprietary mounts. I would also assume that if you had a tapered muzzle to the same angle it would help there as well. The technology with which these suppressors are manufactured make them very durable according to the manufacturer. That gives them higher ratings than expected, and increased durability rating as well. The Hyperion K has special boron nitride coating inside that helps reduce fouling inside the suppressor. The outside has very attractive and durable DLC coating.

Welcome to the Family

I tucked the Hyperion K into my bag with a few other suppressors, and I retreated to my mountain hide. Having planned on shooting the Hyperion on various rifles I was already very familiar with, as well as how the rifles react to suppressors. The first rifle and the primary one I was to introduce to the Hyperion was my Desert Tech SRS M2.  It is a multi-caliber precision rifle. There are untold possibilities as far as custom calibers. At the moment I probably have over a dozen different caliber conversions for this rifle.

Today on this particular range trip I had installed my 6mm GT conversion kit, which has become one of my favorites. Seeing as how the Hyperion is rated for much larger calibers, I expected it to work very well on this configuration. I have shot this same barrel with half a dozen other suppressors, so I was prepared to feel and hear something different.

Upon installing the Hyperion I did notice one little thing that concerned me. The tapered breach of the threads resulted in the threads starting approximately two to three tenths of an inch farther into the suppressor. The result obviously is that there is less thread engagement than a non-tapered thread cap. I suppose this could be a much bigger concern if you were running the suppressor on a larger rifle such as the 300RUM it is max rated for. But I felt there was enough thread engagement to be safe, so I started sending rounds.

The Sound

When I first broke the trigger, I was more focused on making sure the can was still there. Thats something that comes when trying a new can on most any host. By the second shot I was definitely paying more attention, and I did notice the difference from what I usually hear. The Hyperion does an excellent job at suppressing the noise. It seems to have a lower tone than many of my other cans. I guess you could say it’s not as “hissy” as most cans, and has a bit deeper tone.

After a couple rounds I decided to start burning through some ammo. Mainly because I love that damn GT and hitting things with it. The Hyperion stayed right where I’d put it. After about twenty rounds fired over the course of a few minutes as far away as twelve-hundred yards it was definitely warm to the touch. But as titanium does, it cooled down very quickly, especially in the cold Rocky Mountain breeze.

More Shooting the CGS Group Hyperion K suppressor

In a very short time the can was easily handled, so I removed it and swapped it over to my Bergara BMP 6.5 Creedmoor. Certainly not a huge step up in case volume and powder charge, but it was a step up. The Hyperion sounded very nice on the twenty-four inch Bergara Rifle as well. I have shot a couple other comparable titanium suppressors on these rifles and I just like the sound the Hyperion makes a little more. It became quite apparent that would need some serious firepower in order to make this suppressor really sweat, something I wasn’t real keen to do, but I figured you guys wouldn’t be happy if I didn’t.
I would have loved to try out CGS’s vented low profile front cap, it has additional ports to allow more gas to bypass. This would have been ideal to use on a semi-auto rifle, as it would likely reduce the gas back pressure coming at the shooter.

I figured I’d so a couple good twenty round mag dumps with a 308 to get it hot, and see how the Hyperion reacts. The semi-auto rating of the Hyperion made me quite confident that nothing I was about to do was going to hurt it. After forty-rounds of 308 Winchester the can was smoking hot, so I figured one more was in order. A whole lot of heat could be seen, but the sound still sounded about the same. I have to assume it began to lose some of its effectiveness as the can got hotter and hotter. But it still was very pleasing to my ears.

Thoughts

I prefer shooting precision rifles over high volume fighting guns, so keep that in mind as I write this. The Hyperion K offers a shorter length than most full size rifle cans, and yet it seems to be quieter. Having used both brake mounted and direct thread cans. I typically prefer the later so it should come as no surprise that this Hyperion fits squarely in my near perfect solution. It has lightweight, short length, and superior suppression power over most. Durability with full-auto ratings is nice to have. I’m sure to many people that is important, but to me not so much. I am fine with the Hyperion not being full-auto rated.
The only thing about this can I didn’t like was the shorter threads, something I think I could easily overcome. I don’t like shooting big bastard magnums that often anyways, so it is of little concern. The back of the threads spun up snug and perfectly square to all my barrels.

I am mystified by the special technology they are weaving over at CGS Group, but it sure seems like they are onto something. If this Hyperion is any indicator, I think I may need to look into additional offerings to see if I’ve been missing out on anything else. I know I may be just a nobody, but the CGS Group Hyperion K is definitely worth looking at if you are in the market.
